Saint Paul, MN : 29-year-old Tibetan woman died in hit by car on Thursday morning October 1 2015

A Tibetan woman has died Thursday after she was hit by an oncoming car at an intersection in St. Paul, Minnesota, home to around two thousand Tibetans. The local Police announced 63-year-old Kunlek Wangmo dead at the scene.
The fatal accident occurred around 6:30 am on Thursday morning, said the Police. The driver of the car, a 29-year-old woman is known to be cooperating with the police in the ongoing investigation, according to a report in local news.

Residents often describe the intersection as a ‘bad corner full of blind spots’.
She was not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol, according to the police.
St. Paul Police Department spokesperson Steve Linders said, “Wangmo was walking southwest on Seventh Street when a car struck her in the crosswalk at St. Clair, Wangmo's husband had crossed the street when he heard the crash and turned around to see his wife lying in the street”.

The police's statement drew public ire and even pointed to lax in the handling of the situation, particularly when Police implied the driver had ‘right of way’ and said, "Obviously she didn't see Ms. Wangmo.” A local resident Jack Schmitt wrote on the comment section of a local paper reporting the news, “That corner has lights everywhere. It is lit up like a Christmas Eve so give it a break. Even if the corner was not fully lit then your little friend should have had her lights on. That poor woman walked there everyday and nobody ran her over before. People race through there to get to 35E and do not give a damn about anyone in their way.”

Another comment echoing similar sentiments read, “Really? Was she invisible? Maybe the driver simply did not yield to the pedestrian or was in too big a hurry to pay attention”.
Kunlek walked the same route everyday with her husband. A fellow Tibetan and resident Jigme Ugen wrote in his face book, “A sad day for the Tibetan community in Minnesota. Acha Kunlek was the victim in a fatal accident earlier today while on a morning walk with her husband in St Paul, Minnesota”.
