WHITEVILLE, NC : Two Whiteville Police cars involved in collision on Saturday, December 10th 2016

A State Highway Patrol report revealed new details after two cruisers from the Whiteville Police Department collided in Columbus County Saturday night.

According to officials, the crash happened around 7:30 p.m. on the U.S. 701 Bypass near the San Juan's restaurant.

Sgt. Jennifer Popynick was traveling north on U.S. 701 when she attempted a U-turn to make an enforcement stop, according to the collision report.

Corporal Stephen Strickland, who was driving behind Popynick's cruiser, crossed into the center turn lane in an effort to avoid a crash and struck Popynick's vehicle in the front door.

Popynick was pinned inside the car and the door had to be taken off to get her out of the car. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Strickland was taken to the hospital also, as routine, but had very little injuries. Both were treated and released the same night.

Popynick's cruiser sustained an estimated $14,000 in damages while Strickland's had $5,000.

The SHP report doesn't mention if either officer was cited for the crash.
