Annapolis, MD : 11-year-old girl killed, two other children critically injured in West Baltimore crash on Saturday 24th September 2016

An 11-year-old girl is dead and two other children are in critical condition after a car crash Saturday afternoon in West Baltimore, police said.

A vehicle carrying the children was traveling westbound on Frederick Avenue "at a high rate of speed" shortly after 4:30 p.m. when it crossed the double yellow line and collided with an SUV, Det. Nicole Monroe said.

The 11-year-old girl was ejected from the vehicle, Monroe said. She was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Three other children — an 11-year-old girl, a 9-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy — were taken to area hospitals, where they remained in critical condition Sunday, Monroe said.

The driver of the SUV was not at fault, Monroe said.

The 26-year-old driver of the vehicle that collided with the SUV was found to be impaired by alcohol, Monroe said. Alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the collision, she said.

The man was taken into custody, Monroe said. He did not possess a valid Maryland driver's license.

Criminal charges are forthcoming, Monroe said.

A 35-year-old man who was a front passenger in the vehicle that collided with the SUV, was injured. He was taken to an area hospital, but walked out prior to being discharged, police said.

The crash occurred in the 2800 block of Frederick Avenue, in the Carroll-South Hilton neighborhood of West Baltimore.

Police CRASH Team investigators are working with the Baltimore State's Attorney's Office, Monroe said. She said criminal charges are forthcoming.
