Southaven, MS : Nesbit woman killed in Alabama accident on Monday, October 2, 2017
A woman from Nesbit has died after being struck by a vehicle in Alabama.
According to Fort Payne, Ala. Police Chief Randy Bynum, Mary Delana Austin, age 40 of Nesbit, died about 9 p.m. Monday night when a vehicle struck her on a street in the northeast Alabama city.
Bynum said in a news release the vehicle Austin was in was traveling north and pulling a small utility trailer. Some items had spilled along the roadway and Austin’s vehicle had stopped to retrieve the items when she was struck by another vehicle.
Police said Austin was taken to a local hospital and then airlifted to Huntsville, Ala., where she died from the injuries she suffered in the accident.
The driver of the vehicle Austin was in and a witness told police the vehicle was sitting in the left turn lane with lights on high beam, blinding oncoming traffic.
The investigation into Austin’s death is continuing, but Bynum said it appears no criminal charges will be filed as “it appears that it was an unfortunate accident.”
Fort Payne is a city of about 14,000 people and is the county seat of DeKalb County, Ala.
