Cocoa Beach, FL : 37-year-old man killed in a hit-and-run crash early Thursday morning, March 9, 2017

A 37-year-old Cocoa Beach man was killed in a hit-and-run crash while walking just a block from the beach early Thursday morning.

The deadly crash shut down part of South Orlando Avenue, which is also serves as State Road A1A, for more than eight hours.

Cody Hoppa lives near the crash site, which was between 2nd and 3rd streets. She said the victim, Brian Holley, was well-known around the area in Cocoa Beach.

In fact, Holley posted on social media inviting everyone to what unknowingly would be his last birthday party in January.

"It just blows my mind," Hoppa said. "Somebody didn't care enough to try and safe someone's life."

That's because the neighborhood, which has direct beach access, is considered a walker's paradise.

"Quite often actually, everything is so close that unless I'm leaving the island, I don't really feel the need to have to drive anywhere," Hoppa said.

"You see we have a basketball goal. My 7-year-old loves to come out and play basketball," she said. "It could have been one of them, and it's a scary thought."

Meanwhile, Cocoa Beach Police have publicly identified a vehicle they're looking for. They are searching for a large, four-door, white (dually) pickup truck. It was seen towing a center-console boat with a dark hull. Police said there was also a large cooler in the bed of the truck.

With that much detailed information, Holley's friends are hoping for justice.

"A block and a half up the road is our police and fire station, and he possibly could have lived nearby. That just blows my mind," Hoppa shared.

“For them to keep going knowing that they just hurt someone, it’s unfathomable," Hoppa said.
