San Leandro, CA : Driver of a big-rig tanker died in a fiery crash on Interstate 880 early Wednesday morning, July 27, 2016
The driver of a big-rig tanker died Wednesday morning in a fiery crash on Interstate 880, the California Highway Patrol said.
The tanker was the only vehicle involved, and the driver lost control just before 4 a.m. while on northbound Interstate 880 at the Davis Street exit, CHP Officer Kevin Bartlett said.
It was not known immediately why the tanker truck lost control. It was carrying refined oil, officials said, and where it was headed to was not released.
The crash left a huge fireball, and Alameda County Fire crews responded and put out the fire.
All lanes of I-880 were blocked after the crash, and the CHP issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic. The CHP opened three of four lanes at 4:17 a.m. The far right lane and the Davis Street exit remained closed as of 6:15 a.m., and there was no estimate for when they would be open.
The Alameda County Coroner's Office was trying to confirm the identify of the driver and notify relatives.
