A two-car crash at a major intersection sent four people to the hospital Saturday night, two of them with major injuries, fire officials said.
The two critically injured people were airlifted by a helicopter to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek after the cars crashed on Walnut Boulevard at Concord Avenue in an unincorporated part of the city, according to a statement from Battalion Chief Jeff Burris of the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District. The crash happened around 5:20 p.m.
A third person went by ambulance to the same hospital, and a fourth was transported to Sutter Delta Hospital in Antioch. Those two suffered moderate and minor injuries, respectively.
Both vehicles suffered heavy damage, and one of the four injured people needed to be cut free from the wreckage with hydraulic tools, Burris said. The California Highway Patrol investigated the crash but did not immediately release details of the crash.
