Tucson, AZ : A pedestrian who was struck and killed in a crash on Wednesday July 12, 2017
Tucson police identified a pedestrian who was struck and killed in a crash Wednesday night on Tucson's east side.
The man is Jerome Vincent Smith, 57, according to a Tucson Police Department Facebook post Thursday.
At about 8:30 p.m. July 12, Smith was struck by a vehicle in the 6600 block of East Broadway, near North Jessica Avenue. The area is between North Wilmot and North Kolb roads.
Smith was not in a crosswalk, police said.
Officers and Tucson Fire Department paramedics found Smith in the roadway with obvious signs of trauma. Smith was pronounced dead shortly after authorities arrived, police said.
Traffic detectives determined that a silver 2006 Hyundai Elantra was traveling west on Broadway when Smith stepped off the center median and into traffic. The driver of the car "aggressively applied his brakes, but was unable to stop," said police.
The driver of the car remained at the scene and cooperated with the police. The investigation is continuing and no citations have been issued.
Detectives ask that anyone who saw the crash call 88-CRIME.
Since January, there have been 33 traffic fatalities in the city, compared to 32 at this time last year, according to police data.
