Grass Valley teen dies in crash in Sutter California
Another teen died on area roads Wednesday.In this incident, the California Highway Patrol says the driver was going much faster than the speed limit.Officer G. Tassone said William Hawkyard and Dakota J. Smith, both 18 and from Grass Valley, were in a 1990 Mazda Miata soft-top on Indian Springs Road coming up on Michelle Court in Penn Valley at 9:53 a.m.The driver, Hawkyard, went into a posted 35 mph curve at a high rate of speed and lost control of the Mazda, according to the CHP investigation. The Mazda went off the road, struck several objects inclujding a utility pole, overturned and rotated backacross the road until it stopped.Passenger Smith had major head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical responders, Tassone said. Hawkyard was taken by air ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center with moderate injures.Tassone said neither alcohol nor drugs were believed to be factors in the crash.That stretch of Indian Springs Road remained closed for repairs to the utilitt pole and lines.
