Morganton, North Carolina
A Nebo man narrowly escaped serious injury after his daughter says a tractor-trailer crashed into his pickup truck and came within inches of his head in Burke County on Thursday.Whitfield Locke Davis, 81, suffered only minor injuries after a wreck on Interstate 40 westbound just before 5 p.m., said State Trooper Jeremy Allen with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Davis had slowed to a stop due to traffic while taking the onramp to I-40 when his vehicle was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer.“It was within six inches of the back of his head,” Theresa Smith, Davis’ daughter, said. “The whole back of his pickup is gone.”The tractor-trailer driver, Bradley Alan Crowe, 47, of West St. Paul, Minnesota, told troopers he struck another vehicle which left the scene before he rear-ended Davis, Allen said. Crowe’s girlfriend was in the tractor-trailer with him, along with two dogs.“He swerved over and parked his tractor-trailer in the back of that Ford Ranger,” Allen said.
Troopers took Crowe into custody on suspicion of driving while impaired. He will be charged with DWI and failure to reduce speed, Allen said.Traffic was delayed until approximately 7 p.m. Responders kept one lane closed during most of the incident, but closed both lanes for about 30 minutes.A secondary collision also occurred shortly after the first, Allen said.Davis was not taken to the hospital but did say he suffered neck and back pain from the collision, according to Allen.
