Opelika,AL : Man arrested in crash involving late Rep. Bandy on February, Wednesday 7th 2018
A Columbus, Ga., man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a vehicle accident that police say led to injuries that were related to the death of Alabama State Rep. George Bandy.
Michael Brooks, 60, was arrested in regard to the Jan. 5 crash in Columbus. Bandy was traveling southwest on Andrews Road near the intersection of 23rd Avenue when he struck a Dodge Ram pickup. The Dodge was driven by Brooks, who was making an improper U-turn, according to Columbus police.
After the crash, Bandy was transported to Midtown Medical Center for treatment of injuries suffered during the collision. Bandy was then later transferred to The Medical Center, Navicent Health, in Macon, Ga., where he died from those injuries Jan. 16, police said in a statement Wednesday.
When the state Legislature reconvened for the new session Jan. 9, it was announced that Bandy had been hospitalized for cardiac and pulmonary circulation issues, according to an Opelika-Auburn News report after his death.
In that report, Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller said Bandy had not been in good health around that time and added that Bandy suffered from injuries from a recent automobile accident.
Injuries suffered by Bandy in the crash are related to his death, according to Columbus police Sgt. Chris Anderson, adding that Bandy suffered from preexisting medical conditions.
