One person died and five others were taken to hospitals after a three-vehicle head-on crash near Bensenville on Sunday afternoon, officials said.
A pickup truck and two cars collided about 2 p.m. at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Crown Road, which is a mostly residential area just outside of a country club, Bensenville Fire Chief Mike Spain said.
One car was eastbound on Grand as the other two were westbound. After the collision, several people were trapped inside the heavily damaged vehicles and had to be cut out, Spain said.
One person inside one of the cars died on the scene while five others, including three who were critically injured, were taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Elmhurst Hospital and Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, Spain said. Several others declined to be taken to hospitals.
Grand between York Street and County Line Road remains closed, DuPage County sheriff’s spokeswoman Dawn Domrose said in an email.
Domrose was not releasing the name of the deceased and had no further information.
Spain, who did not know the cause of the crash, said the road will remain closed until about 7 p.m.
