McKeel Academy girls golf coach Dennis Brown is in intensive care at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center after a severe car accident at 4:35 a.m. Monday near U.S. Highway 98 and Marcum Road in Lakeland.Brown, who will turn 65 in October, travels to Webster Westside Market in Webster on Mondays to sell golf supplies.
According to information received from several people close to the team, Brown received three emergency surgeries on Tuesday to stop internal bleeding caused partly by medication from a previous heart condition.
The sources said Brown is in stable condition but not able to receive visitors outside of family and clergy.
“Dennis is a great golf coach, but he is an even better person,” McKeel Athletic Director Chuck Smith said. “He knows he is in good hands. He told me last week, 'The Lord is going to take care of me, and I don't have a worry in the world.' That just speaks volumes of where Dennis is in his life.”
Brown has been the head coach at McKeel for 11 years.
The Florida Highway Patrol handled the case, and no other information about the accident is available at this time.
