Chicopee, MA : 2 dead when vehicle crashes into Air Reserve Base fence on Tuesday, November 1, 2016
Authorities say two people died when their vehicle crashed into a perimeter security barrier at a western Massachusetts Air Reserve base, but a base spokesman says it does not appear to be an intentional act.
Lt. Col. James Bishop says the speeding vehicle crashed through a fence and into a concrete barrier at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
He says the Kia Soul burst into flames and base fire crews were on the scene within minutes to douse the flames and extricate the victims.
The unnamed occupants of the vehicle had no known connections to the base. Bishop says the damage has already been repaired.
State police are investigating. A department spokesman says there's no evidence that it was an intentional attack on the base.
