Morristown, TN : 16 year-old girl dead and mother in serious condition after getting hit by a car in Morristown on Tuesday, July 28, 2015

A teenage girl died and her mother remained in critical condition Wednesday after both were involved in what might have been a hit-and-run crash in Morristown, police said.

The collision was reported about 8 a.m. Tuesday at the corner of Joe Hall Road and Christopher Lane, where a Nissan Versa spun out of control, struck a utility pole, spun in the air and landed on its side, said Morristown Police Department Maj. Michelle Jones.

Christal Cupp, 37, and her 16-year-old daughter, Amy Cupp, both of Morristown, were found on the ground outside the vehicle, Jones said.

"Initially, we thought they (had been) in the vehicle," Jones said. "They were not in the vehicle, they were on the side of the road."

Both were flown by LifeStar helicopter to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, where Amy Cupp died overnight, Hamblen County Coroner Eddie Davis said. The mother remained in "very critical condition" Wednesday night, he said.

The Nissan was registered to a Morristown woman who reported the vehicle stolen after the crash, Jones said.

No arrests have been reported as police continue to search for the driver.
