Mitchell, SD : A Mitchell city employee sustained minor injuries in a two-vehicle crash on Thursday, June 15, 2017
A Mitchell city employee sustained minor injuries in a two-vehicle crash Thursday that left a city vehicle upside down.
At about 1:20 p.m., Jamie Henkel, 38, of Mitchell, driving a 2001 Chrysler Voyager owned by the city, was traveling northbound on Hunter Street and drove through an uncontrolled intersection with Third Avenue, where she collided with a 2004 Dodge Ram, driven by 35-year-old Mitchell resident Tanner Stunes, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety (DPS). According to the Davison County website, Stunes is an assessor in the Department of Equalization.
According to DPS, the truck struck the front, passenger side of the Voyager, which rolled and came to a rest upside down in a nearby yard.
Henkel sustained minor injuries and was transported by Mitchell Emergency Medical Services to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Stunes was not injured.
The Mitchell Police Division and Davison County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash, but because Henkel is a city employee and Stunes was driving a personal vehicle, the South Dakota Highway Patrol was asked to investigate, which is common practice to avoid conflicts of interest.
Both drivers were wearing a seat belt, and there are no charges pending. There were no passengers in either vehicle, and DPS had no damage estimates.
