St. Bernard , LA : 33 - Years old driver killed in Crashed after hit a van that had turned into his path in eastern St. Bernard on Thursday , February 12th 2015
A St. Bernard Parish man died Thursday (Feb. 12) when the moped he was driving hit a van that had turned into his path in eastern St. Bernard, State Police said.
Joshua Drakain, 33, was driving a 2013 Taoi moped east on Louisiana 300 at Deborah Drive when State Police say a 2001 Chevrolet Astro Van turned in front of him about 2:35 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 12). The moped hit the back of the Chevrolet and Drakain was thrown from the moped.
Drakain was taken to the Interim LSU Hospital's trauma center, where he was pronounced dead, according to a preliminary State Police investigation released Friday (Feb. 13).
Joel Edward, 29, of St. Bernard, was driving the van north on Deborah Drive when he turned right onto Louisiana 300 and into the moped's path, investigators said.
Edward submitted to a breath test and no detectable alcohol was found, State Police said. Toxicology results on his blood were pending Friday.
State Police said the crash remains under investigation.
Drakain was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, State Police said.
State Police reminded motorists to safely share the road with motorcycles.
"Following crashes, motorists often report difficulty in accurately judging the speed, size, and proximity of an approaching smaller vehicle specifically motorcycles," according to the State Police announcement on the crash.
