Rapid City, SD : Crash leaves one dead on Sheridan Lake Rd and Catron Blvd on Friday, December 19, 2014
One man was killed and at least four others seriously injured in a three-vehicle wreck on Sheridan Lake Road Friday.
Dozens of firefighters and paramedics were on the scene after dark as temperatures dropped below freezing and wreckage from the three vehicles was scattered across the road.
"It's one of the more traumatic ones I've seen," state trooper Derek Mann said.
The accident happened just after 5:30 p.m. about a mile south of Wildwood Drive, he said.
A Chevrolet SUV was headed westbound when it crossed the center line causing a Range Rover in the opposite lane to swerve off into the embankment. As the SUV got back on the road, it collided head on with a Cadillac Escalade, Mann said.
The driver of the Chevrolet SUV was killed, he said. Four people in the Cadillac were transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital with serious but non-life threatening, injuries.
Two people in the Range Rover had minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene, Mann said.
The scene was blocked off to motorists at least a half-mile down the road near the intersection of Sheridan Lake Road and Wildwood Ave.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The Pennington County Sheriff's Office, Rapid City Fire Department and Whispering Pines Fire Department assisted at the scene.
State police are withholding the man's name pending notification of his family.
