A tow truck worker who was shot and killed and the man who is accused of killing him have both been identified, according to authorities.Paul Gren, 53, was shot and killed by 35-year-old Tremain Polk on Tuesday night after Polk got upset when he didn't have enough money to get his truck back and tried to leave with it, according to the Orlando Police Department.
Polk has been charged with first-degree felony murder, officials stated.
Investigators said he became irate when he was $150 short of his $285 bill to retrieve his truck from the Tow Truck Company tow yard at 639 W. Robinson St., and an employee threatened to call police.
Witness Jasmine Brown, who lives across the street, said Wednesday that Polk wasn’t done yet.
“The man, he was jumping the fence, trying to get to his car, and he broke like three windows over there,” Brown said.Brown said Polk used a crowbar to cause damage to other vehicles. Still angry, witnesses said Polk got in his truck and attempted to drive it out.
“He rode around the thing twice, and he got on the phone with somebody,” Brown said.
Police said Polk then tried to open the closed bay door, but an employee stopped him. That's when Gren, the tow company's owner, stepped in. Gren was holding a gun at his side, not raising it, police said in an incident report.
Investigators said Polk decided to ditch the truck and leave, but as he walked out the door, he turned, pulled a gun from his waistband and shot and killed Gren from point-blank range.
When police got to the scene, they spotted Polk running from the tow yard, officials said. Officers apprehended Polk at a nearby business loading dock off Livingston Street.
“He shot like eight shots, then he jumped on top of the roof, and the police were coming and they caught him back on there," Brown said. "I was scared. I had my baby on the porch. There were kids all around,” she said.
