A 13-year-old Dempsey Middle School student is being treated for "very serious" injuries after a car struck her near the school this morning in Delaware.

Delaware police Capt. Adam Moore said a sedan traveling south on Troy Road hit the student shortly before 7:15 a.m. Jan. 4 near Barrett Street, less than a mile from the school.

Moore said medics transported the student to Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware before she was transferred to Nationwide Children's Hospital with injuries he described as "very serious."

Moore said the driver of the car stopped at the scene and cooperated with officers. He said the intersection was closed until about 10 a.m. as investigators attempted to reconstruct the crash.
