Fort Myers, FL : Bicyclist killed in crash on U.S. 41 in North Fort Myers on Thursday afternoon, May 19, 2016
The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for witnesses to a U.S. 41 crash that left a bicyclist dead Thursday afternoon.
The bicyclist did not have any identification and remains unidentified. Troopers describe him as a 50-year-old white male.
The incident which occurred before 2 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Brooks Road left the roadway closed to traffic for a few hours.
According to a news release, a 2003 Chevy Malibu was heading north on U.S. 41 when the bicyclist attempted to cross the road. The driver of the Malibu tried to avoid the bicyclist but was unsuccessful.
Pamela Turner, of North Fort Myers, said she got to the crash scene shortly after it happened and spoke with the driver.
"They just got out of school," she said the 19-year-old male driver and his girlfriend told her.
The bicyclist was pronounced dead on scene by Lee County EMS.
"You can see where he hit the windshield," Turner said.
