Boyle Heights, CA : One man died after an SUV slammed into a tree in Boyle Heights on Sunday, April 12, 2015

A man died early Sunday morning after the SUV he was driving slammed into a tree and a parked vehicle in Boyle Heights, authorities said.

The collision occurred about 3:17 a.m. near the intersection of Concord Street and Cesar Chavez Avenue (map), according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

News video showed firefighters using heavy equipment to reach the victim inside the wreckage of a Jeep Cherokee. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released.

The cause of the collision was under investigation. Witnesses told police that the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Cesar Chavez Avenue at a high rate of speed before it struck the tree.

Los Angeles County coroner’s officials were en route to the crash site.
