DAVENPORT, FL : Orlando man dies in U.S. 27 crash on Friday, 21st October 2016
An Orlando man died after his pickup slammed into the rear of a tractor-trailer truck.
John Daniel, 31, was killed when his 1996 Chevrolet S-10 pickup reportedly struck the rear of the truck driven by Michael Marciniak, 51, of Lynn Haven, about 4:15 p.m. Friday, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office reported that Marciniak, driving a 2001 Freightliner pulling a box trailer, had stopped in traffic on U.S. 27 just south of Polo Park Boulevard, Davenport.
Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Donna Wood said the truck, owned by Southern Delivery, Little Mountain, S.C., was in the inside left, northbound lane. Daniel was driving north on U.S. 27 when his pickup hit the rear of the tractor-trailer at "highway speed," Wood said.
The S-10 pickup sustained significant damage on the passenger side and the tractor-trailer sustained damage to the rear axles.
Wood said Polk County Fire Rescue had to use machinery to cut Daniel out of the pickup. He was transported to Celebration Hospital's trauma unit and later died at the hospital.
The investigation showed no signs of braking by Daniel. An investigation showed Daniel was not wearing a seat belt, but the driver's side airbag did deploy. Northbound U.S. 27 was reduced to one lane of travel for approximately three hours.
Wood said excessive speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash, and distracted driving and possible medical conditions are under investigation. The investigation is ongoing. No charges are anticipated.
