Greeley, CO : Five injured in west Greeley crash that closed 83rd Avenue for three hours Friday, March 24, 2017
Five people were injured Friday night after a head-on crash that closed 83rd Avenue just north of 20th Street for about three hours.
The drivers of both vehicles had to be extricated from the crash and both were taken "emergent" to North Colorado Medical Center. Three children in one of the cars also were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
According to Greeley police Sgt. Joe Tymkowych, the crash was called in at 7:34 p.m. after a 2002 silver Hyundai Sonata, driven by Brigham Scott Adolph, 32, of Greeley veered into the oncoming traffic as he was driving south on 83rd Avenue just north of 20th Street. A red SUV was able to swerve out of his way and avoid a collision, but a 2006 tan Nissan Murano, driven by David Miranda, 49, of Pierce, was struck head-on by the Sonata.
Tymkowych said there were three young children in Miranda's vehicle, who received injuries as well. One was a 6-year-old, who was treated at the hospital and released. One child had an injured wrist and knee, and another had a possible fractured pelvis, Tymkowych said.
Both drivers were pinned in the crash at the driver's side doors, and crews had to extricate them with the Jaws of Life. Both men were injured and taken to North Colorado Medical Center by ambulance. Officers cleared the scene until shortly before 10:30 p.m.
Miranda and Adolph were both listed in fair condition Saturday at North Colorado Medical Center, according to Banner Health spokesman Paul Matthews.
Adolph was initially cited for two counts of careless driving causing injury, driving on the wrong side of the road and having expired plates. The investigation, however, continues, Tymkowych said.
The driver of the red SUV left the scene, Tymkowych said, and police would like to talk with that person just for another witness account of the crash.
