MAILI, HI : Speed a factor in moped crash that seriously injured 7-year-old on April, Tuesday 11th 2017
A 7-year-old boy was seriously injured Monday after being struck by a moped in Maili, Emergency Medical Services said.
The incident happened about 9 p.m. on Kulaaupuni Street.
Police said the boy was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk. That’s when a moped hit the boy, then crashed into another car and was thrown onto the road.
“Two cars passed, then he stepped out into the roadway and there was a moped coming from the west to the east, and the moped didn't have any lights from what I could tell, and it was going really fast, and it struck the boy,” said Robert Goodwin, a neighbor who witnessed the crash.
He said speeding is usually a problem in that area.
Officers have confirmed that speed was a factor in the crash.
The moped operator, a 24-year-old man, was also listed in serious condition following the crash.
