Rock Island, IL : Ambulance involved in crash in Rock Island on Thursday, 26th July 2018

An ambulance carrying a patient and two emergency medical responders was involved in a rollover crash late Thursday afternoon in Rock Island.

The crash happened at the dangerous intersection in front of Dollar General, which is the intersection of Sparta Highway and Rock Island Road.

A minivan collided with the ambulance, causing it to roll. It was a White County ambulance heading toward McMinnville.

The three ambulance occupants suffered the most serious injuries. A female was driving the minivan and was being given a field sobriety test on the scene. She didn't appear to have suffered serious injury.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Kevin Ballew said Thursday night around 6 p.m. the highway would remain closed while a crash scene investigation takes place. He did not have a timetable for when the highway would reopen.

He was not able to provide names of those involved Thursday at 6 p.m.

That intersection has been the spot for several major wrecks in recent years. TDOT is in the process of placing a flashing light at the intersection, but it hasn't happened yet.
