Tacoma, WA : Homeless woman died after she was struck and killed by a car on Tuesday night, February 16, 2016

A homeless woman died late Tuesday after she was run over by a car in Tacoma, police said.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman as Ambrosia Martinez, 39.

The accident occurred about 10:45 p.m. in the 9600 block of Pacific Avenue.

A driver traveling south on Pacific Avenue was distracted by a man on the side of the street and flailing his arms, police said.

“His attention was drawn to the individual on the side of the road and he didn’t see a woman lying on the ground,” officer Shelbie Boyd said.

The driver wasn’t sure whether he hit something or someone, so he turned around and came back to the area, police said.

Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe Martinez was lying in the street when the car passed because there was no damage to the upper part of the vehicle.

The driver was not cited or arrested.
