About 20 Good Samaritans jumped into action Thursday after a man crashed his vehicle into a parked car near Sand Lake Road. The vehicle caught on fire and the driver – identified as Jerold Garner, 46, of Orlando – died.
"Everybody was trying to break the windows to bring him out of the car,'' said Johanne Wolter, who called 911. She also removed the man's shirt after others pulled him from the wreckage and performed CPR on him until paramedics arrived.
"So many people tried to help," she added. "I feel sad for the family."
It happened a little before 3 p,m. on Commodity Circle and Equity Row, which is off John Young Parkway near Sand Lake Road.Garner was driving his 2006 Dodge Viper in a parking lot off Commodity Circle when, for an "unknown reason," he lost
control of the car, Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Kim Montes said.
The car ran off the road, striking a fire hydrant and a tree in the crash. Garner then drove back onto Commodity Road and into the parking lot, where he struck an unoccupied parked vehicle, Montes said.
That's when Garner's car caught fire, and a witness pulled him from the car.
Garner later died at an area hospital.
