Lapine, OR : Three people died in a head-on crash on Highway 97 north of LaPine on Tuesday night, Nov 17, 2015

Three people died in a head-on crash Tuesday night when a driver fleeing deputies crossed over the center line of Highway 97, Oregon State Police said.

That driver, who was killed, was a fugitive from Nevada, OSP said.

Deputies called off the pursuit of the driver just minutes before the deadly crash because of the suspect's dangerous driving, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

OSP said a deputy tried to pull over a Dodge pickup in Bend driven by Brett M. Young. Police said Young, who was wanted for felon in possession of a firearm, didn't stop. He fled and, according to witnesses, police said he passed other cars in a no-passing zone.

He then hit a Ford Escape head-on around 8:40 p.m. He died at the scene. The driver of the Ford, 33-year-old Steven L. Clink, was killed as well as his passenger, 50-year-old Pamela James.

Highway 97 was closed for several hours while state troopers conducted an investigation.
