Bethlehem Township, PA : Vehicles are off the road Wednesday morning on the Route 33 North on-ramp from Route 22 on September 3rd 2014
A 32-year-old Williams Township woman was involved in at least four crashes this morning -- three of which happened after she stole a car from someone who stopped to help her as she climbed out of a work van she had rolled, authorities report.
The woman, identified police as Kimberly Ann Landes, had yet to be charged tonight because at least five law enforcement organizations are involved in the investigation, Northampton County Assistant District Attorney Jim Augustine said.
Landes was taken to St. Luke's University Hospital in Fountain Hill after the car she stole struck a PPL utility pole along Route 191 near Santee Mill Road in Bethlehem, said Sgt. Daryl LaPointe, with Bethlehem Township, Pennsylvania police. She will be tested to see if she was under the influence of intoxicants, LaPointe said.
The series of crashes began, LaPointe said, when Landes wrecked the van about 8:25 a.m. on the Route 22 West on-ramp to Route 33 North in the township and stole a silver car, which emergency dispatches described as a Pontiac G6.
Police never were in pursuit of Landes, because they were "a couple of steps behind" as she drove toward Bethlehem, LaPointe said.
The township -- which was "like the hot dog in the bun, sandwiched between" two more serious crashes -- investigated two minor wrecks, he said.
Landes drove from the Route 33 interchange west on Route 22, exiting at Route 191 and, running the stop sign, continued into the intersection and struck a car, causing minor damage, LaPointe said.
Landes went south on 191, and, pulling into the left turn lane near Oakland Road, sideswiped a vehicle in the through lane, LaPointe said.
The silver car started to spin and spun out of the township, traveling about 100 feet and into the city, LaPointe said.
The out-of-control car struck the rear of a northbound vehicle about 8:40, then mounted the curb, causing undercarriage damage, and slammed into the PPL pole, LaPointe said. The pole needed to be replaced, emergency dispatches say.
Landes may have tried to commandeer another vehicle there, but was unsuccessful, Augustine said.
One person, other than Landes, was hurt in the township accidents, but the injuries were minor, LaPointe said.
An emergency radio report said one person was transported to St. Luke's Hospital in the township, but it was unclear from which accident scene that person was taken.
Pennsylvania State Police at Belfast continued to investigate the ramp crash, which was discovered by a Palmer Township police officer, and the car theft, and Bethlehem police responded to the final wreck.
"She wreaked havoc," LaPointe said. "I'm glad that doesn't happen every day. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt."
Bethlehem Township and Bethlehem were forwarding information to the Lehigh County Auto Theft Task Force, officials from each department said. The task force said Augustine would provide information to the public.
Augustine this afternoon said the woman is believed to have tried to steal multiple vehicles. He added he was unsure of who owned the work van.
"I don't know ... the extent of her injuries or whether anyone else was hurt," he said.
The woman was in custody or under supervision at an area hospital, Augustine said, adding he was unsure of her whereabouts.
He declined to identify the woman because the investigation is continuing into potential charges in multiple jurisdictions.
"While there is a suspect identified, charges haven't been filed yet and we're still piecing together the investigation," Augustine said.
It could be Thursday until charges are filed and the woman has her preliminary arraignment, he said.
