Winchester, IN : Richmond man killed when a semi-tractor trailer collided with recycling truck in Randolph County on Tuesday, April 5, 2016
A Richmond man was killed Tuesday when a semi-tractor trailer collided with a recycling truck on an overpass carrying U.S. 27 over railroad tracks and Ind. 32.
Randolph County Coroner Tim Crawford said Gregg Schutte, 59, an employee of the Recycling Center in Richmond, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Deputy Chief Jon Reed of the Winchester Police Department said the southbound semi jackknifed on the overpass and collided with the northbound recycling vehicle. Icy pavement was reported in the area on Tuesday morning.
The semi driver, whose name was not immediately released, suffered head cuts and was taken to St. Vincent Randolph Hospital, where he was in stable condition.
State police assisted the Winchester Police Department at the scene. Train traffic on the tracks below the crash scene was stopped in the wake of the accident.
The accident was reported about 6:45 a.m., dispatchers said. The federal highway reopened to traffic early Tuesday afternoon.
Debra Edelman, a co-owner of the Recycling Center, said Tuesday afternoon that Schutte was "a very good driver, and a very good employee."
"We're just devastated," she added
Tuesday's accident marked the second tragedy in less than two weeks for the Recycling Center.
On March 23, worker Robert Samples was killed at the South M Street facility in an accident involving a baler.
