Washington Township, OH : Woman, 77, killed in Richland County crash on Tuesday, December 2, 2014
A 77-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a single-car crash in Richland County on Tuesday.
Highway Patrol says the crash happened at about 2:55 p.m. on U.S. Route 42 in Washington Township.
Troopers say Carol Pittenger of Lexington was driving fast on the wrong side of the road heading south on U.S. Route 42 from Hanley Road.
Pittenger drove off the left side of the road along a curve, then slid off of the right side of the road and struck an embankment and utility pole, according to Highway Patrol.
Troopers say Pittenger was ejected from the vehicle and she struck a fire hydrant as her car continued rolling over, striking the fire hydrant and a culvert before coming to rest in a driveway.
Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash.
Pittenger was not wearing her seatbelt, according to Highway Patrol.
Troopers say they suspect Pittenger may have been having a medical emergency at the time the crash.
The road was closed for about two hours as crews worked at the scene of the crash.
Highway Patrol says the crash remains under investigation, pending an autopsy report.
