Branford, CT : Massachusetts woman killed in a four-car crash on I-95 in Branford on Sunday morning, February 8, 2015
A 55-year-old Massachusetts woman was killed early Sunday morning in a four-car accident after she drove her car in the wrong direction down Interstate 95 southbound.
Mary Chiapulis of Boylston, Mass. died after her 2009 Hyundai collided with three other cars near the Branford Service Plaza on Interstate 95 at 12:48 a.m. The accident occurred between Exit 53 and 54 and Interstate 95 was closed for three hours while the Connecticut State Police investigated.
Chiapulis' car first hit the passenger side of a 2004 Acura MDX driven by 54-year-old Franck Dalembert of Norwalk, according to State Police. Her car then hit a 2008 Ford driven by 30-year-old Daniel Rizzo, of Milford, head on in the left lane of the three-lane highway. A vehicle driven by Patsy Depalmer, 50, of Woodbridge, swerved to avoid the collision between Chiapulis and Rizzo, but her 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee was ultimately hit by the Hyundai driven by the Massachusetts woman.
Branford Deputy Fire Chief William Pepe said one of the accident victims was in cardiac arrest when first responders arrived on the scene and had to remove one of them using the Jaws of Life tool.
"With the number of patients we needed to treat, we requested the East Haven Fire Department for mutual aid," Pepe said in a statement.
Ambulances from the Branford and Guilford fire departments as well as from American Medical Response took the accident victims to New Haven area hospitals.
The current injury status of the surviving victims are unknown.
