Lafayette, TN : Three people killed and another person injured in a three-vehicle crash in Macon County on Saturday, September 10, 2016

Three people were killed and another person was injured in a three-vehicle crash on Saturday in Macon County.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a tractor-trailer hauling plastic pallets driven by Christopher L. Brady, 41, of Moss, TN, was driving east on State Route 52 around 5:20 p.m.

While negotiating a left turn, Brady’s truck lost traction and jackknifed, causing the vehicle to cross into the westbound lane and strike pickup trucks driven by Jeffrey A. Van Overberge, 46, of Westmoreland, TN, and Jay R. Scruggs, 28, also of Westmoreland.

Van Overberge was unable to avoid the collision and went under the trailer of the semi-truck. He and passenger Justin L. Spears, 25, also of Westmoreland, were declared dead at the scene.

Brady was also pronounced dead at the scene.

The trailer struck Scruggs’ truck in the front end.

The tractor-trailer continued off the north side of the road and came to rest in a deep ravine. Scruggs’ truck was pushed off the north side of the west bound lane facing east.

Scruggs was taken to Skyline Medical Center by a personal vehicle after the crash.

According to the preliminary report, Scruggs has been charged with driving on a suspended license.
