Newport News, VA : 1 dead following pedestrian crash on Mercury Boulevard on Tuesday night, December 20, 2016

One person has died following a pedestrian crash Tuesday night in the 1800 block of Mercury Boulevard near the ramp to I-64, Hampton police spokesman Matt Bond said.

The call came in about 7:50 p.m., dispatch said.

The crash happened when a dark Chevrolet SUV was driving east on the off-ramp to I-64 and hit the pedestrian, Bond said.

When they arrived, crews found the man lying in the roadway on West Mercury Boulevard and pronounced him dead at the scene, Bond said. The driver wasn't injured, Bond said, and couldn't comment on whether he wil be charged. Crews and the driver are on the scene.

The incident is being investigated by the Hampton Police Division's Reconstruction Team.

The exit ramp on I-64 east is closed off, and crews are working underneath the overpass, where the person was hit.
