PERRY COUNTY, TN : Charges possible in Perry County crash that killed bicyclist on State Highway 438 East at Lower Cane Creek Road on Thursday, 3rd January 2019
Investigators say the driver who hit and killed a bicyclist Wednesday in Perry County appeared to be under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash and charges are pending.
The crash happened around 2:45 p.m. on State Highway 438 East at Lower Cane Creek Road.
Tennessee Highway Patrol reported the driver of an SUV was traveling east on State Highway 438 as a bicyclist turned onto the road from Lower Cane Creek Road.
According to a THP crash report, the driver of the SUV attempted to stop but lost control of the vehicle and hit the bicyclist with the back rear tire causing fatal injuries to the bicyclist.
The SUV rolled down an embankment and came to a rest on its side. The 30-year-old driver from Linden and her 30-year-old passenger were not injured.
THP identified the bicyclist killed as 30-year-old Lora Mast of Pleasantville and said she was not wearing a helmet.
The crash report also stated the driver of the SUV was believed to be under the influence of drugs but further testing will be required as charges are "pending" in the case.
Tennessee Highway Patrol will continue its investigation into the fatal crash.
