Topeka, KS : Man extricated from truck after crash on Wednesday night, November 5, 2014
A man was taken to a local hospital in serious condition after the truck he was driving overturned and rolled down a steep hill Wednesday night.
Kenneth L. Johnson, 74, of Topeka, was driving his 2002 Ford F-250 pickup truck in the left lane of westbound traffic of US-24 Highway about 5:50 p.m. when cars slowed in front of him, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log.
Johnson, “applied his brakes, and swerved to the right (the truck) overturned and slid on its roof,” and down a hill on the north of the highway. It stopped on its driver’s side at the edge of a corn field.
When emergency responders arrived at the scene near the N.W. 25th Street exit, they began cutting the roof off the truck to gain access to Johnson.
The severely damaged windshield was rolled forward onto the truck’s hood.
There was a trail of debris on the hill the marked the path the truck took as it rolled and thick black tire marks could be seen for several feet preceding the spot where the truck left the roadway and rolled down the grassy hill.
According to the report, Johnson was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
No one else was in the car at the time of the crash.
