Lincoln County, OK : Former OU player James 'Jimbo' Elrod killed in a single-vehicle crash on the Turner Turnpike early Monday morning, December 12, 2016
James "Jimbo" Elrod, a former football player for the University of Oklahoma and the Kansas City Chiefs, was killed early Monday morning in a single-vehicle crash on the Turner Turnpike.
Elrod, 62, was pronounced dead at the scene after crashing his 2015 Lexus about four miles west of Chandler.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Elrod was traveling eastbound on the turnpike when his vehicle departed the roadway to the right. While trying to re-enter the roadway, the vehicle struck the backside of a guardrail, causing the car to roll multiple times.
Elrod was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected through the sunroof. The car eventually came to a rest in a ravine.
Elrod's wife was a passenger in the car and was transported by helicopter to an Oklahoma City hospital with multiple head, internal and external injuries. She is listed in serious condition.
According to the OHP, troopers on the scene detected an odor of alcohol on Elrod.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Elrod was an All-American linebacker and a member of the 1974 and 1975 OU national championship teams. He was drafted by the Chiefs in 1976.
"Great wrestler and a great football player. Wrestling is what made Jimbo such a great football player. It gave him great upper-body strength and quickness. He could really run. He was a tenacious player and a competitor. He was really good and he was a member of a great group at Oklahoma," said former OU head coach Barry Switzer. "Jimbo has always been an 18-year-old guy to me because that's what he was when I signed him. He always had movie-star looks and a lot of hair. I was always jealous of his hair. Everybody was. I called a lot of Jimbo's former coaches and teammates this morning. We lost a great one. It's devastating."
