Charlotte, North Carolina
A single-car accident in east Charlotte claimed a woman's life Saturday morning, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
The crash happened just after 7 a.m. Saturday in the 7900 block of Albemarle Road near Almond Road.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say an officer was driving by and noticed a car in a yard that had hit a tree. After a closer look, the officer reportedly found a deceased woman, later identified as Shameka Nicole McCormick, inside the car.
Investigators believe McCormick ran off the road, hit a tree, and spun before coming to a stop in the grass.
McCormick was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead on scene from the injuries she sustained in the crash, according to police.
Police say they don't know what time the crash happened, because there were no witnesses, but say alcohol use appears to have been a factor.
