Pendleton,OR : Woman sentenced for wreck that killed 3 motorcyclists on December, Friday 22nd 2017
An Oregon woman was sentenced to nearly 2 years in prison for the wreck that killed three motorcycle riders
Lisa Niehaus, a Condon resident, was sentenced following her guilty plea last month to multiple assault charges and three counts of criminally negligent homicide, the East Oregonian reported .
Niehaus, 50, was driving on state Highway 19 near Fossil in central Oregon when she crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic, striking a group of motorcycle riders, authorities said.
At the time, about 45 members of the Gypsy Jokers Motorcycle Club were on the road heading to a rally at Bear Hollow Park.
The collision with the group killed two people at the scene and a third person died at the hospital a week later, authorities said. Six other people received injuries that included broken bones, head trauma and lower leg amputations.
In a statement issued jointly by Wheeler County Sheriff Chris Humphreys and District Attorney Gretchen Ladd, the authorities described the injuries as life-altering and the crash scene as chaotic. They said Niehaus had a dog on her lap, a cellphone nearby and marijuana in the car.
Niehaus had claimed she was blinded by the motorcycle headlights and closed her eyes as a result.
