Marion County, FL : 3-year-old boy critically injured in a two-vehicle crash on SR 200 Thursday afternoon on August 14, 2014
A 3-year-old boy was critically injured in a two-vehicle crash on State Road 200 Thursday afternoon.
The boy's older brother and his father had non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the second vehicle had no injuries, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.
John Smigielski, 81, the driver of a red Dodge Dakota, told an FHP official that he was heading west on the busy roadway while a Nissan Altima was going the same direction.
Smigielski told the trooper the Altima, which was driven by Joseph Lee Olson, 32, suddenly changed lanes and ended up in front of him. He said he was unable to get out of the way or stop, so he veered to the right. The Dodge plowed into the back of the Altima, causing severe damage mostly to the passenger’s side.
Olson, however, told troopers that he was in the outside lane stopped a red light when the other car rear-ended him.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Southwest 65th Avenue Road and SR 200.
Olson and his two sons, Owen Olson, 5, and Nicholas Olson, 3, were taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center. Nicholas was then flown to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville with critical injuries, troopers said.
Marion County Fire Rescue officials said the Olson family members were wearing their seat belts. Smigielski told troopers he was wearing his.
On scene, Smigielski told a Star-Banner reporter that the Nissan was traveling beside him and abruptly came in front of him. He said he could not stop in time and crashed into the back of the car. He said he was traveling 55 mph to 60 mph at the time.
Smigielski said he was on his way home from the doctor’s office.
He voluntarily gave blood to troopers and the investigation is on-going, officials said.
