Louisville, KY : Four injured, including Louisville officer, in I-64 crash on Thursday, March 29th 2017
Four people including a Louisville Metro Police officer and two pedestrians — were injured late Thursday night in a crash on Interstate 64 West near Payne Street. One of the pedestrians is in serious condition.
Shortly after 11:30 p.m., a First Divison officer was sitting in her police cruiser at the Payne Street overpass while completing a report for a single-car collision, according to Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley. The vehicle was parked in the left lane with its overhead emergency lights on.
The three male occupants of the car involved in the crash were standing outside near the officer's vehicle, Smiley said. The officer then warned the three men that a third vehicle was speeding toward them.
The third vehicle then struck the Louisville Metro Police car, pushing it into the middle of Interstate 64 across both westbound lanes. The third vehicle also struck two of the pedestrians before coming to a rest next to the first car, Smiley said.
One of the pedestrians suffered serious injuries, while the Louisville Metro Police officer, another pedestrian and the driver of the third car suffered non-life-threatening injuries. All four were taken to the University of Louisville Hospital. The third pedestrian was not injured.
Smiley said authorities do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash. Louisville Metro Police's Traffic Unit is investigating. No other information was immediately released.
