Redding, CA : 14 people injured in a three-vehicle collision on northbound Interstate 5 at the Hartnell Avenue in Redding on Friday night, March 27, 2015
A 27-year-old Redding woman was identified late Saturday as a suspected drunken driver who crossed into oncoming freeway traffic, causing a three-vehicle collision that left 14 people injured Friday night, the California Highway Patrol said.
Erica Lynn Bollinger was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence of alcohol following the 10:13 p.m. crash on northbound Interstate 5 at the Hartnell Avenue overcrossing in Redding, the CHP said.
Bollinger, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered moderate injuries with back pain and forehead bruises, the CHP said. Injuries to 13 other people in two vehicles, varying in age from 9 to 63, ranged from complaints of pain to a leg injury that resulted in one woman having her leg amputated at the ankle.
Here's how the CHP described the crash:
Bollinger was driving her blue 2007 Pontiac G-5 south at 70 mph while approaching the overcrossing. She lost control of the car, which broke through the center median cable barrier and went into the northbound lanes, colliding nearly head-on with a 2014 Dodge Caravan being driven at 70 mph by Yuchen Liu, 26, of Eugene, Oregon, with five passengers.
The impact spun the van clockwise and it was hit on the right side by a 2002 Ford Excursion also traveling north driven at 70 mph by Dionne M. Decker, 43, of Klamath Falls, Oregon. Decker had six passengers with her.
Emergency responders began a multi-agency transport effort with the injured occupants being sent to four hospitals: Mercy Medical Center and Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding, Enloe Hospital in Chico and St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Red Bluff. Everyone was wearing a seat belt except Bollinger.
All lanes of northbound I-5 were blocked a half-mile south of Cypress Avenue after the collision, the Department of Transportation said. Those lanes were reopened at 11:58 p.m. Friday.
The CHP said the collision remains under investigation.
Liu, in the Caravan, had pain in his chest, legs and left arm. His passengers were also from Eugene. Ting Gang Li, 26, had chest and back pain. Ni Na Jamilla Hung, 21, suffered a fractured pelvis and ribs, and had a lacerated liver. Yang Sui, 20, suffered closed head trauma. Jing Chun Gue, 27, suffered head and chest trauma, and ankle injuries that required her ankle to be amputated. Yuting Xiong, 22, suffered left leg trauma and pulmonary contusions.
Dionne Decker, in the Excursion, reported chest pain. Her passengers were from Klamath Falls. Kimberly Pershall, 39, had pain in her right foot and chest. Gaven Decker, 19, had fractured teeth and pain in his face and nose. Terry McReynolds, 63, had chest pain. Kayla Pershall, 19, had forehead bruises and right knee pain.
