ELKINS, WV : Bus accident leads to injuries on Thursday, September 7, 2017

A Randolph County school bus driver and students were injured early Thursday morning when a car struck their bus as it was heading to North Elementary School.

“There were some minor injuries, including the bus driver,” said Assistant Superintendent of Schools Debbie Schmidlen.

Approximately 45 students were on the bus at the time, Schmidlen said, and less than five students were transported by ambulance to be treated for minor injuries. The bus driver also was taken from the scene by ambulance, and he was treated and released, she said.

The accident occurred just before 7 a.m., she said, when the bus was signaling to make a turn onto Kennedy Street.

“The car hit the bus on the right-hand side of the door,” Schmidlen said. “How exactly that happened, I don’t know.”

She said several local police and emergency agencies responded, and the students who were not injured were taken to North Elementary, where they could eat breakfast. The students on the bus included elementary, middle and high school students, and all parents were contacted right away.

“We called every parent, and we gave them the option of checking on their child to see if they wanted to continue on to school or take them home. … Most parents chose to take them home, and they signed them out,” Schmidlen continued.

She said North Elementary School staff did a great job of getting breakfast ready for all the students, and they provided a room where the students could eat and wait for their parents to arrive.

“That helped the kids not be so nervous,” she said.

Elkins City Police Department is the investigating agency, and additional details about the accident were not available Thursday afternoon.
