Two drivers were injured in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 40 in Bellevue on Monday morning.

Metro police said an SUV was traveling in the wrong direction for at least 5 miles before colliding with a box truck near Old Hickory Boulevard around 2 a.m.

The driver of the SUV, 45-year-old Joseph Birdsong, was unconscious and pinned inside the vehicle. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition.

Police said Birdsong was not wearing his seat belt.

The driver of the box truck, 36-year-old Steven Culberson, suffered minor injuries and refused treatment.

The interstate was closed for several hours and did not reopen until 10:30 a.m.

Police said drugs or alcohol were not involved. The crash remains under investigation.
