East Orange, NJ : Separate I-280 crashes leave 4 people dead in northern New Jersey on Wednesday, August 27, 2014
Three people were killed and four others were injured in a crash on an interstate highway in northern New Jersey.
State police say a dump truck traveling eastbound on I-280 in East Orange struck a car around 10:35 a.m. Wednesday, causing a "fireball" that killed three people in the car. Authorities couldn't identify the victims or determine their gender because they were so badly burned.
At least five other vehicles were struck by the dump truck. Its driver, another adult and two children were all treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
A short time later, a van driver was killed when the vehicle rear-ended a tractor-trailer less than a mile away from the first accident. But authorities say there was no link between the crashes, which remain under investigation.
