Rockville, MD: Southern Utah man in critical condition after head-on collision on Saturday, July 19th 2015

A Washington City man was critically injured Sunday afternoon when his vehicle was struck nearly head-on by a 16-year-old driver attempting to pass an RV, officials said.At approximately 3:48 p.m., a Ford Taurus driven by a 16-year-old from Hurricane, Utah, began to pass an RV while traveling eastbound on SR-9. A Plymouth Prowler occupied by two adults, driver Timothy Chard, 51, and Erin Chard, 34, was traveling westbound at the same time, unbeknownst to the driver of the Taurus.The driver of the Taurus attempted to brake and swerve to avoid hitting Chard's vehicle, but the two vehicles collided nearly head-on, according to officials.The Taurus had three other occupants, ages 16, 18 and 20.Timothy Chard was critically injured and flown via medical helicopter to Dixie Regional Medical Center. Erin Chard was taken by ambulance to the same location.Everyone involved in the accident was using seat belts.The occupants of the Taurus were treated and released at the scene.Both lanes of traffic were blocked by the vehicles and accompanying debris and SR-9 remained closed for nearly an hour.Impairment is not suspected, but the incident is still under investigation.
