Bronx, NY : Wrong-Way Driver Killed After Collision With DOT Truck Near Major Deegan on Tuesday morning, September 23, 2014
A man driving the wrong way on a one-way street in The Bronx died when he crashed his car into a Department of Transportation dump truck Tuesday morning, authorities said.
The gray Toyota Camry was headed southbound on a northbound stretch of Jerome Avenue in Woodlawn at 7:10 a.m. when it collided with the dump truck turning right onto Jerome from East 233rd Street near the Major Deegan Expressway, according to cops.
The DOT employee, who was hauling blacktop at the time of the deadly smash-up, saw the car heading right for him.
“The Camry was coming up on the on ramp for the New York Thruway driving the wrong way,” said the worker, who declined to give his name.
After the accident, the dump truck driver walked over to the Camry, which had handicapped license plates.
“I looked in, and I could see the driver’s artificial hip sticking through his body,” the worker told The Post. “He was dead when I got there.”
The 63-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Investigators said it was not immediately clear how the driver, who has yet to be identified, wound up going the wrong way on Jerome Avenue.
The road forks into two individual thoroughfares, one northbound and one southbound, near the entrance ramp to the highway.
