South Salt Lake police have identified two people who died after allegedly running a stop sign and crashing into a streetcar.
Jessalyn L. Heaten, 36, and Raymond Benally, 33, died in the crash Friday evening. Both are from Salt Lake City, according to a police news release.
Heaten was driving northbound at a "very high rate of speed" on 400 East when she allegedly ran the stop sign at 2200 South, Utah Transit Authority spokesman Remi Barron said. An eastbound UTA streetcar struck the car about 6:45 p.m.
South Salt Lake Police spokesman Gary Keller noted that "there's kind of an outcry right now for lights and [crossing] arms" at the intersection, but added that "the intersection is clearly marked. … It's a stop sign. People just need to stop."
