Portales, NM : Former police officer died after being struck by a vehicle on N.M. 88 east of Portales on Wednesday, April 15, 2015
A former Portales police officer died Wednesday night in Portales after being struck by a vehicle while walking along the highway near her home.
according to New Mexico State Police Capt. Matt Broom.
Kandi Davis, 30, — formerly Kandi Garcia was struck shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday on N.M. 88 east of Portales, according to Broom.
Broom said the identity of the driver or the make and model of the vehicle is not being released and no arrests have been made in this incident. He said the investigation is still ongoing.
Portales Fire Department Chief Gary Nuckols said two vehicles were headed in opposite directions after sundown on N.M. 88. The vehicles passed each other, and the eastbound vehicle struck Davis walking alongside the road.
“The driver said he didn’t see her,” Nuckols said.
Davis was a patrol officer who also worked undercover narcotics cases for the Region V Task Force. She was a key witness in the trial of alleged druglord Scott Foster of Clovis, characterized by Chief District Judge Drew Tatum during sentencing as the “number one public enemy” in eastern New Mexico.
“She was a witness in a slew of drug cases in Clovis,” District Attorney Andrea Reeb said. “At the time of the undercover drug operations, she was an undercover informant.”
Reeb said Davis had testified in four or five trials, and there are five cases left in which she was scheduled to testify. Reeb said she does not anticipate Davis’ absence will affect the cases since she was wearing a camera for each incident.
Former Portales Deputy Chief Lonnie Berry was there when Davis joined the Portales police force.
“I thought she was just a really good person. She was good to people,” Berry said. “I thought she was a good kid. I left (the police department) a year or so later, but would always see her around town. She was always friendly and would stop to speak with you to visit a few minutes.”
Davis would always check on her neighbors, Berry said, and enjoyed spending time playing with her daughter.
“I thought she was a good mother. I was just very impressed. Her daughter was young at the time, and she would always be right there while her daughter was in the yard,” Berry said. “She had a lot of potential.”
Davis is survived by her husband, Tyler Davis; her daughter, Alexandra Diaz; her mother, Dorothy Ramone and her father, James Lennon. The family was not available for comment on Friday.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Central Christian Church in Portales.
